Japanese eShop to give away 3D Excitebike

Speaking at an investors’ briefing yesterday, Nintendo’s CEO and president Satoru Iwata shared the company’s plans for promoting next month’s big firmware update for the 3DS, which will bring the built-in web browser, DSiWare transfers, and the eShop to the system.
When the eShop debuts — offering DSiWare games, Virtual Console releases, 3DS demos, “3D Classics”, and more — the service will offer a 3D-enhanced version of NES racer Excitebike for free in Japan to entice users. It’s not clear yet if the eShops in North America and Europe will also receive Excitebike or any other title for free.
Iwata also mentioned that while the 3DS’ Virtual Console will feature Game Boy and Game Boy Color releases to start, the company hopes to offer games from other platforms in the future. Nintendo previously announced that Game Gear and TurboGrafx-16 titles will eventually appear on the portable Virtual Console shop.
