Attract Mode selling custom arcade cabs, three Game Over IV prints

February 27, 2011 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - News and Chit-Chat

Remember those neat arcade cabinets that we featured from the Attract Mode x Babycastles show a few months ago? They were painted by artists Hilary Florido and David Mauro, and featured designs inspired by shoujo manga and ’80s beat’em-ups, respectively.

Both of the cabinets — originally sticker club machines before these attractive make-overs — are now for sale on Attract Mode! They’re a bit pricey at $1,200 each, but you would be buying “a centerpiece from a watershed moment in NYC’s game-oriented history.” You can see a couple more shots of the setups and other related stuff I’ve been meaning to talk about after the break.

“Codependent No Moe” by Hilary Florido:

“Babycastles no Fukushuu: Manhattan Fury” by Dave Mauro:

Ms. Florido will also have her art featured at the upcoming Game Over IV show, which I can’t believe I haven’t talked about here yet. Giant Robot SF is hosting another exhibit dedicated to video game-inspired artwork, and it kicks off with a party next Friday as GDC wraps up.

Attract Mode helped bring three different works to the show, like this Tetris tribute from Florido:

And this Sega Saturn piece from Cory Schmitz (EXP):

And Farel Dalrymple’s vision of futuristic cats/consoles:

Prints for all three pieces will be on sale at Game Over IV/Giant Robot SF, and Attract Mode also intends to sell them online shortly after their debut. We’re told they’re ”high quality reproductions of the artwork, prints suitable for framing.”

LittleBigPlanet 2 from LOVEFiLM

February 24, 2011 :: Posted by - admin :: Category - Reviews

It’s back! It’s better! It’s big… No, wait. It’s not just big. It’s LittleBigPlanet 2, the sequel to 2007’s hugely successful puzzle platformer video game for the Playstation 3.

LittleBigPlanet was one of the first majorly marketed and successful games for the console (that wasn’t a first person shooter, mind) that in many ways introduced us to the new features and concepts Sony had added. As a platform game, the idea behind LBP was simple – work your way through linear levels, collecting objects and overcoming obstacles. But there was so much more to this game, where you could customise your cute little Sack Person and control almost every movement of their body by angling your controller.

But that was just the beginning, because LittleBigPlanet 2, nearly four years in the making, features “a brand-new, epic story adventure”, and this time you need to save the whole of LittleBigPlanet itself! All your favourite moves from the first game will return, swinging, grappling, jumping and spinning your way through levels, and Sack Boy even has some new moves in his repertoire that you’ll have to discover for yourself.

Most exciting is the game’s expansion of the original creative concept. In LittleBigPlanet, you could create your own levels to share with players around the world, and you could play on theirs. In LittleBigPlanet 2, your creativity isn’t limited to a level – you can create entire new games.

The game has only been out for a few days but is already showing huge signs of success. It has already shot straight to the very top of the UK gaming chart, even beating strong competition from the highly anticipated Mass Effect 2. If you want to get your hands on a copy, online rental service LOVEFiLM, always on top of the latest releases, has it in stock for both rental and purchase, as well as a host of other PS3 games. Whilst you’re there, be sure to browse the site’s expansive range of XBOX games and Wii games as well – you won’t regret it!
